Laziness...

Do you enjoy being lazy? What is your definition of lazy? Is it wrong to be lazy? Do you know anyone who is lazy? What is your work ethic like? Do you do the best you can in your job, or do you do just enough to get by? Do you put forth your full effort when doing a task, or do you go after it halfheartedly?

Definition of Lazy: *
1. Resistant to work or exertion; disposed to idleness.
2. Slow-moving; sluggish: a lazy river.
3. Conducive to idleness or indolence: a lazy summer day.

The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about the lazy man (sluggard), so I will list a few of the verses from Proverbs, but not all of them. (I will put some extra references at the end of the post.) I also chose the New Living Translation for most of the text this week (I love how straight forward it is), so I encourage you to look the verses up in your favorite translation!

Scriptures for this week:

Proverbs 10:4, "
Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich." (NLT)
Proverbs 13:4, "Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper." (NLT)

You can't make money being lazy. (or at least you shouldn't be able to...)

Proverbs 10:26, "Lazy people irritate their employers, like vinegar to the teeth or smoke in the eyes." (NLT)

It is so annoying to me as a fellow employee to work really hard to accomplish something (like meet goals that are set for you), but others who don't meet the goals and don't even try to accomplish much at all get the same raise as I do. Or I don't get as good a raise because everyone else didn't meet the goals set for them. So I can only imagine how irritating it could be to watch someone you hired not try, or be lazy!

Proverbs 12:11, "A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense." (NLT)

If you don't work you don't eat!

Proverbs 18:9, "A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things." (NLT)

And you can destroy things by being lazy/neglecting them. Most things worth having in life take hard work to obtain or keep them.

Proverbs 26:15, "Lazy people take food in their hand but don't even lift it to their mouth." (NLT)

You know that toilet seat your mother or wife asked you to put down, or the make-up that is all over the bathroom sink that your husband has asked you to clean up... it only takes a couple seconds... What is stopping you?

Proverbs 24:30-34, "I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; 31thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. 32I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: 33A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—34and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. (NIV)

Is this what your room or house looks like? Is there an inch or two of dust on everything? Do you spend your days off just lying on the couch watching TV or playing video games??? Get up and do something productive!

Romans 12:11, "Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically." (NLT)

Do everything as unto the Lord. This should be how you look at your work whether for your boss, spouse, parents, whoever... We should have a servant's attitude. Jesus came to serve, not to be served. (John 13:12-14)

Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father." (NLT)

Someone asks, "How are you today?" You reply, "I'm Blessed how about yourself?" (I encourage you to make this your response for a week or two; you may be surprised at the reactions you get!)

Extra verses for this week's topic:
Proverbs 12:27
Proverbs 15:9
Proverbs 20:4
Proverbs 26:14
Proverbs 28:19
Ecclesiastes 10:18
Matthew 25:14-28 (parable of the Talents)
Hebrews 6:12

Witchcraft

Witchcraft... Some of you may be wondering what is witchcraft? Is there such thing in today's world? What qualifies as witchcraft? What things in this world (toys, movies, books, etc...) depict or encourage witchcraft? Does the Bible really say that witchcraft is bad?

Definitions*:
Witchcraft:1: a : the use of sorcery or magic b : communication with the devil or with a familiar 2: an irresistible influence or fascination

Witch:
: one that is credited with usually malignant supernatural powers; especially : a woman practicing usually black witchcraft often with the aid of a devil or familiar : sorceress.

Divination:
: the art or practice that seeks to foresee or foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge usually by the interpretation of omens or by the aid of supernatural powers.

Sorcery: : the use of power gained from the assistance or control of evil spirits especially for divining

This Week's Scriptures:

Exodus 22:18, "Do not allow a sorceress to live." (NIV)

Pretty obvious...

Leviticus 19:26b, "Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft." (NLT)

Can't get much clearer than that...

Leviticus 19:31, "Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the LORD your God." (NLT)

Consulting mediums or witches can separate you from God; it puts your relationship in jeopardy.

Leviticus 20:6-8, “I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution by putting their trust in mediums or in those who consult the spirits of the dead. I will cut them off from the community. 7So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the Lord your God. 8Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord who makes you holy." (NLT)

Do what God says, and He will protect you. Don't jeopardize your relationship with Him for a whimsical fortune telling...

Leviticus 20:27, "'Men and women among you who act as mediums or who consult the spirits of the dead must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense."' (NLT)

If we did this stuff now a days (putting sinners to death for capital offenses the real capital offenses), we wouldn't have near as many problems in this world as we do... You can't go wrong when following God's Word!

Deuteronomy 18:9-14, “'When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. 10For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, 11or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. 12Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you. 13But you must be blameless before the Lord your God. 14The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such things.'” (NLT)

If we would stop sinning against God, we would be a nation safe and blessed by Him. But instead we follow or engage in the detestable things, and we pay for it. All the things listed in the above scripture are things God hates. Why would you want to do something that dishonors Him; something He forbids?

1 Samuel 15:23, "'Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.'" (NLT)

If you think about it... Witchcraft is rebellion... Along with a lot of other things...

2 Kings 21:6, "He [Manasseh] sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger." (NIV) (Repeated in 2 Chronicles 33:6)

It makes God angry when we practice evil things.

Galatians 5:19-21, "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." (NIV) (emphasis added)

I think they are obvious, but a lot of people in this world don't know right from wrong. Look in the Word and learn what God blesses and curses.

Revelation 9:21, "And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts." (NLT)

Guess what's going to happen to them? (read the next scripture)

Revelation 21:8, '"But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars--their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."' (NLT) (emphasis added)

Pretty serious stuff... I don't think we want to be practicing witchcraft. I personally wouldn't get near it with a ten foot pole!

What things are witchcraft that might effect you? Anything with sorcery or revolving around death probably isn't a good idea. Including some of the following: Harry Potter, Twilight, Wizards of Waverly Place, Ouija boards (pronounced weegie board), Tarot cards, Horoscopes, etc... Let's face it... The only one who knows the future is God. We don't need to waste our time trying to figure out what tomorrow will bring, for God knows the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11). I encourage you to put your trust in the Lord, not in a Ouija board. He will bring the best out of you!

Extra Scriptures to look up: Isaiah 47:9, Micah 3:7, Micah 5:12-13, Nahum 3:4, Revelation 18:23

Give and It Shall be Given unto You

Are you a tither? Do you give the full 10%? Or do you give a dollar here and there? Maybe you give more than 10%... What spurned your decision to give or not to give? Where do you give? To your church, to missionaries??? What is the point of giving anyway? What does the Bible say about it?

Scriptures for this week:

Leviticus 27: 30;32;40, “‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord. 32The entire tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod—will be holy to the Lord.' 34These are the commands the Lord gave Moses on Mount Sinai for the Israelites." (NIV)

This is where the tenth of your income comes from. The Israelites gave a tenth of what they had, which was given to the Levites. The Levites, then, were asked to give a tenth of that back to God (which was Aaron/the high priest's portion). (Numbers 18:26)

Mark 12:41-44, "Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.'” (NIV)

Even if we have very little, it is important to give to God. He will take care of and supply all of our needs (Philippians 4:19). When we give to God even when we have very little, this proves to Him how much we love and trust Him. God will bless us for our efforts!

Luke 6:38, "Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." (NLT)

Can you imagine having so much money that it needs to be vacuum packed just so you can fit into your bank what you would get tomorrow??? If you give the ten percent, you will get that much back and more to the point that you will need to make room for all that God will bless you with! And if you give more than ten percent, that just opens the door for God to give you even more back!!! How Awesome is that!?!

This verse not only applies to money, but to anything you might give (including negative things). If you read the scriptures around this passage, you will see that Jesus it talking about being selfless, forgiving, and not judgmental.

Malachi 3:10, "
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do," says the LORD of Heaven's Armies, "I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!" (NLT)

Once again, so much that you won't have enough room to take it in! This is the only matter in which God says we can test Him. He must be pretty serious about it.

It is God's desire to bless us (Deuteronomy 28:6). When we give to Him, we enable Him to give to us. Ten percent isn't very much... Especially considering when you give that ten percent, God will give you more than that in return. Test Him if you want... I'm sure you will discover that you are way better off to give to God than to keep it for yourself! (Acts 20:35)

As always, I am interested in hearing your thoughts and testimonies!! :)

Blessings!

Bless and Do Not Curse!

Have you ever had one of those days where it seems like everyone you encounter is mad at you for some reason? Or maybe you got cut off by someone on the freeway? Or maybe stopping for a school bus is making you even more late for that meeting with your boss... What ever it is, something is irking you today... What is the best thing we could do in these situations?

Scriptures for this week:

Romans 12:14, "Bless those who persecute you. Don't curse them; pray that God will bless them." (NLT)

If someone cuts you off, instead of swearing or screaming at them choose to bless them.

Matthew 5:44, "But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!" (NLT)

Pray for someone who continually bugs you, or never has anything good to say about you (or anybody else).

1 Corinthians 4:12-13a, "We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us. 13We appeal gently when evil things are said about us." (NLT)

This is what Paul was doing. We should follow his example.

Luke 6:27-31; 35-36, “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. 28Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. 29If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also. 30Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don’t try to get them back. 31Do to others as you would like them to do to you... ...35Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. 36You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate." (NLT)

We don't know other people's stories or backgrounds. We may never know why they do the things that they do, but we can choose to not let them have a negative effect on us. These verses in Luke 6 are right from Jesus's mouth. He spoke them. We should desire to live like Jesus and follow His example.

My Story:
On the way to work the other day I pulled out in front of someone. They were going faster than the speed limit, so they approached me faster than I anticipated. (Or I never would have pulled out in the first place.) First this person laid on the horn, and road my bumper all the way to the light. Unfortunately they were going the same direction I was, so they were still behind me while I was sitting at the stop light. After turning (onto a two lane road), this car road up beside me and honked again while making hand gestures out the rolled down window. (I tried to not pay attention to the driver.) Then they pulled in front of me in the lane I was driving in. After turning onto the same street as this driver, I couldn't help but feel sorry for them. After all, I was always going the correct speed limit, and I didn't mean to slow them down. A little farther down the road this vehicle pulled off to the left and just sat there. (I was starting to get a little worried... After-all what in the world were they going to do?) As I drove by their position they honked again and flashed their lights at me before turning down that road to wherever they were headed.

So what was the point of this story? Well, I began to pray for this person while continuing on to work. I will probably never see that car again, but I honestly hope that their day went better than it started. Can you imagine being so angry with your life that you get aggravated that a car pulled out in-front of you, and it ruined your day? Was it worth it? What could you do to make the situation better? Have you been in either of these positions? (Mine or the other driver's) What could I have done to make my situation better? What could this other driver have done? I pray that you will be able to bless and not curse others for things that they do, whether it is big or small. God loves them just as much as He loves you. You never know what good could come of a simple prayer instead of an impatient horn blast!

Blessings,
